The Answer Was Right in Front on Me: A Case Study: How to Determine the Last Slaveholder of Your Ancestor

   The presentation will offer tips and strategies for researching your ancestor’s last slaveholder using online resources, courthouse records, will and inventory appraisements, published family histories and local county histories found at libraries and archives.

Speaker Bio:

Debra Blacklock-Sloan is a sixth-generation Texan and native Houstonian. She is a self-employed historical researcher, professional genealogist and the historic research director for the R.B.H. Yates Museum, Inc. in Freedmen’s Town. Her memberships include the Harris County Historical Commission, Afro-American Historical & Genealogical Society-(Willie Lee Gay H-Town Chapter), Association of Professional Genealogists, Oak Park Historic Cemetery Association, Friends of The African-American Library at the Gregory School and Harris County African-American Cultural Heritage Commission.

She has received numerous accolades for her preservation and volunteer efforts over the years, presented local workshops on African-American family research and has been featured in several newspapers and publications. Blacklock-Sloan has also authored and edited articles for the African-American Handbook of Texas. Her past collaborative efforts include intensive research on some of Texas’ most relevant African-American institutions and communities. She is currently working with local groups on the Equal Justice Initiative’s Harris County Community Remembrance Project.
