Karen Kossie-Chernyshev (PhD Rice University) serves as professor of History at Texas Southern University.  A fourth generation Texan, she is the first African American woman to earn a PhD in the field of History from a Texas institution.  Her research focuses on African American Women's Intellectual history, African American religion, and the African Diaspora.  She has published numerous articles, book reviews, and encyclopedia entries on various topics.
