“Thinking like a Genealogist: Using Your Five Senses”

Participants will learn how to think like a genealogist by using their five senses using an African-American genealogical research strategy that simplifies and demystifies the process and makes it more intuitive and user friendly.

 Speaker Bio:

Franklin Carter Smith was born and raised in Claiborne County Mississippi and has been engaged in family history research for nearly 40 years. He retired in 2020 from the Clayton Library Center for Genealogical Research in Houston Texas. His specialty area is African-American research, with a specific interest in enslavement area research.  He co-authored with Emily Anne Croom, “A Genealogist's Guide to Discovering your African-American Ancestors.”  Several of Mr. Smith's articles have been published in Family Tree Magazine and has presented talks to numerous Texas groups and organizations on African-American Family History research.  His earliest documented enslaved ancestor is a 5^th great grandmother born in 1760 in North Carolina.  He holds a B.A. in Political Science from Alcorn State University, M.P.A. from Drake University and a J.D. from the University of Houston Law Center.
