Dr. Linda Hazel Humes is currently a doctoral Lecturer in the Africana Studies Department at John Jay College in New York City. Her area of research is African American storytelling and culturally responsive education. She is the Chair of the education committee for the National Association of Black storytellers. Dr. Humes is the founder of Yaffa Cultural Arts Inc. and StoryPower LLC. Both organizations are in collaboration with Transcendent Ent. co-produced a documentary on the Black Family Summit Inc. which had its Baltimore premiere in 2024. In celebration of Yaffa’s 30th year anniversary of excellence in arts in education, Mayor Eric Adams proclaimed December 15, 2022, as Yaffa Cultural Arts Day in New York City.

Her theatrical credits include being the entertainment reporter for PM Magazine and principal work in commercials, television, and film. Dr. Humes is a storyteller and folklorist who performs and conducts workshops nationally and internationally. Her CD, Kwanzaa- A Time to Celebrate received the 1999 Silver Parents Choice Award. Her latest CD, On the Shoulders of Our Ancestors and children’s book, The Night Anansi Stole Kwanzaa is meeting rave reviews. Dr. Humes was one of 40 women honored in 2017 by the American Museum of Natural history for the 40th anniversary of the Margaret Mead Film Festival.
