IN MEMORIAM

MARQUITA ELAINE WALKER ANDERSON
Co-organizer & first Secretary of AAHGS-H-Town Chapter
transitioned from this realm February 18, 2004. In fact, the
idea to revive the then defunct AAHGS Houston Chapter was
conceived in her office late September 2002. A trained
historian and professional librarian, Anderson
possessed the ingredients required to
take charge of her “dream job,” as University Archivist &
Coordinator of
Special Collections at
Texas Southern University. Her proclivity to preserve
matters of historical value inspired her to develop plans to host
a local history conference. Probably her single most
contribution is cataloging (80% completed) the Barbara Jordan
Archives, by applying modern archival principles. She was in
process of creating comprehensive finding aids, specifying the
arrangement and description of the numerous artifacts, papers,
books, ephemeral, etc. owned by the late
Honorable Barbara Jordan. It is within this capacity
that AAHGS-Willie Lee Gay-H-Town Chapter immortalizes her—as a
guardian of preserving the legacies of historical & social
significance for the benefit of future posterity.
